The Architizer A+Awards, the world’s largest and most prestigious architectural awards program, returned for its 12th year with a renewed sense of purpose. This year, we’re embarking on a journey to explore the transformative power of architecture by focusing on the theme “Rethinking Architecture.”

Reimagine, Revive, Reinvent: Celebrating Transformative Architecture

At its heart, architectural design is about rethinking space — whether that space is an empty site, existing building, or a combination of the two. In the current climate, rethinking the status quo is more critical than ever: As cities densify, the climate crisis takes hold, and our environment becomes more fragile, architects are being called upon to reimagine the very nature of building — not just for today or for tomorrow, but long into the future.

Reflecting this theme, the 12th A+Awards invites firms to submit a range of timely new categories, with an emphasis on reuse, renewal, and regenerative design. New and expanded categories include:

  • Sustainable Adaptive Reuse or Renovation Project: For adaptive reuse and renovation projects that incorporate sustainable systems and materials, and follow best practices pertaining to the ethical design, construction and operation.
  • Architecture +Renewal: Communities around the world are in need architecture that brings a sense of renewal to their environment — whether it be socially, economically, physically or figuratively.
  • Residential and Commercial Adaptive Reuse Projects: Two distinct categories for residential and commercial projects that involve the creative transformation of old, derelict, abandoned or outdated architecture for an explicitly new use.
  • Architecture +New Materials: For projects that display a substantive and innovative use of new, unconventional, emerging or experimental materials, or that utilize traditional materials in innovative new ways.
  • Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm: For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in adaptive reuse and/or renovation projects. Eligible firms should submit at least 3 projects built within the last 10 years.

Throughout the awards season, we’ll delve into the stories behind some remarkable transformations from last year’s A+Awards, learning how these projects redefine the boundaries of architecture and inspire us all to see the potential in existing spaces.

New This Year: The Best Sole Practitioner Award

As part of our continuous commitment to recognizing more talented individuals in the architectural community, Architizer is proud to introduce the A+Award for Best Sole Practitioner. New for this season, this special Firm Award category is dedicated to the many architects globally who run their own business with no in-house employees, working with clients and collaborators to deliver high quality architecture across typologies and at multiple scales.

Surveys shows that more than a quarter of all AIA member-owned architecture firms are sole practitioners, forming a creative driving force for the profession despite their limited resources. This award is designed to honor those unsung heroes in architecture, who wear multiple hats and consistently meet the diverse needs of their clients.

There are also Firm Award categories dedicated to firms of all sizes and specializations:

  • Best Extra Small Firm, Best Small Firm, Best Medium Firm and Best Large Firm for exceptional architecture firms across all size categories (click here to discover which your firm is eligible for).
  • Best Young Firm and Best Young Interior Design Firm, for innovative studios founded within the last 10 years.
  • Best Interior Design Firm, Best Landscape Architecture Firm, and Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm for firms specializing in interiors, landscape design and adaptive reuse / renovations.
  • Best Sustainable Firm, for architecture and design firms demonstrating excellence in the field of sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental design.
  • Best Residential, Commercial, and Public Projects Firm, for firms excelling in those architectural typologies.
