The Brief: Design and build a home that has zero net energy consumption and zero carbon over a 50 year or less period and for a construction budget of AUD $300,000 or less. The winning team must engage with industry to transfer knowledge learned and new construction techniques used in the build process.
Design Response: A team of professionals was formed under the name “Collaborative Future” to design a competition entry. The multi disciplinary team combined knowledge to create a home with advanced sustainable credentials while retaining a contemporary style acceptable to many Australians.
Innovation was the key and visible from the ground up. Recycled concrete reduced the largest single carbon component as did the use of locally derived materials from stone and timber to cladding and paint finishes reducing “construction kilometers”.
