Yuma Fire Station No. 1 is located in the historic area of Yuma, Arizona. The site was once home to a magnificent Mission Revival school that sadly burned down. Perched on a site that sits above adjacent streets and property, the historic retaining walls remain and will be incorporated into the new Fire Station. The City, Historic Board and Fire Department selected the site of this fire station to be a focal point for the City and stressed the importance of styling the station in a historical theme akin to surrounding structures. Key to this site and this station were designing a floor plan that would be functional and flexible enough for the growing department and easily be adaptable to multiple elevation styles. The use of single-occupancy dorms and unisex bathrooms allow for fluctuations in the
number of male and female fire fighters. Each dorm also provides day lighting and operable windows for natural ventilation. Direct circulation
from the dorms and main living spaces minimizes response time and is clearly defined through space planning. Offices have clear views into the apparatus bays. The split plan design allows the battalion chief quarters to be separated from the rest of the station while still maintaining direct access to the bays. Yuma Fire Station No. 1 was the recipient of the 2013 Station Style Satellite Fire Station "Gold" Award.
