The Younch Hotel in Xi'an, designed by MUDA Architects, is located in the heart of Xi'an’s new urban district, in the historic area of Huangcheng Fang. It sits at the northeastern corner of the ancient city wall, within walking distance of the Ming Dynasty city gate. This boutique hotel, with its 16 rooms, weaves together the dual narratives of historical context and urban regeneration, offering a unique opportunity to reinterpret the heritage of this ancient capital through a contemporary lens.

With the concept of a "temporal vessel," MUDA Architects aims to create a serene, immersive environment that seamlessly fuses traditional Chinese architectural elements with modern design language. The hotel is envisioned as a layered sensory journey, where materials, light, and shadows converge to reflect the intersection of past and present.

The design unfolds like an immersive journey through time—guests transition from the vibrant pace of Xi'an's streets to a quiet, tactile sanctuary. The public spaces are conceived as a cultural gallery, adorned with handcrafted ceramics, calligraphy, and seasonal gardens, where the shifting daylight reveals subtle traces of time. The guest rooms, with their refined materials and natural light, evoke warmth and intimacy. Walking through the ancient city of Chang’an, the imagery of blue bricks, dark tiles, bamboo, and intricate carvings come together as fragments of inspiration. These elements, woven into the proportions and textures of the space, offer a multi-sensory experience that blurs the boundaries of time.

The interior design continues the local expression through a modern lens, with a restrained yet rich selection of materials: aged wood, raw stone, black-glazed ceramics, and hand-dyed linen reflect the tactile beauty of the region's craftsmanship. The texture of rammed earth evokes memories of the Loess Plateau, while bamboo-weaving patterns capture the fleeting changes of light and shadow. Each material is a vessel of cultural memory, contributing to the hotel’s tranquil, atmospheric environment.

The sunken courtyard garden and tea room blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, capturing the beauty of the changing seasons: spring’s fresh greenery, summer’s lotus flowers, and the bare branches and warm stoves of autumn and winter. This creates a peaceful yet vibrant refuge. A bronze spiral staircase leads to the underground dining and wellness areas, where light mimics the rhythms of daylight, evoking the feel of a secluded woodland retreat. The guest rooms range from 40 to 160 square meters, with slanted roofs that echo traditional Chinese forms, allowing soft light to filter into the space. Suspended artworks further enhance the atmosphere, creating a warm and inviting ambiance, like the first light of dawn. Some suites offer private hot tubs, courtyard views, or vistas of the ancient city walls, allowing guests to quietly witness the timeless beauty of the city.

By integrating the authenticity of materials with a clear narrative, Younch Hotel becomes more than just a place to stay—it is a living scroll of Xi’an’s evolving story. Here, time becomes architecture, and architecture becomes memory.
