The proposal aims to address this question: ‘What is the architectural notion of cultural space for local community in the twenty-first century?’ The aim is to create a place that would not only play a core of local community, but also could be a future heritage representing local identity. The site is located in a rural area facing the most significant landscape: Bulgok mountain. Historically, there was a performing stage called Byeolsandae, which means special stage resembling a mountain. It was a public space, shelter and playground where people can enjoy. The proposal is derived from surrounding nature and history. It provides a cultural green park more than just an art center. The large curved canopy provide a shaded pedestrian plaza and green park creating a new public realm for Yangju. Under the canopy, two buildings are designed in a delicate rounded form and thin pillars supporting canopy are positioned carefully to make art center to more accessible for public. It can be featured as urban place where audiences and the public can share their experiences. It could be a space that provides a sensory experience similar to walking through a forest and breaks down barriers between inside and outside. The new art center will become a future heritage reflecting the cultural identity of Yangju as the modern version of Byeolsandae from the past.
