This resort hotel hidden in the valley has the original intention of constructing an idealized natural life state, and it has been fully realized with reasonable design methods.
Xianghu Xiaoyao Manor, located in Xiang Lake Tourist Resort 20km away from downtown Hangzhou, extends to the water of the Xiang Lake in the west and connects with mountains in the northeast. The site enjoys favorable natural landscape, but has a steep terrain, so the starting point of the design is to create a natural and relaxed hotel space in a place with significant mountainous characteristics.
The design drew on the spatial texture characteristics of rural villages in Zhejiang Province to build a complete elevation system along the mountain with the mountain stream as the east-west vein and the slope as the north-south vein, forming an organic continuum of mountainous community.
The public areas and main guestrooms of the hotel are arranged in the east of the site, where the gradually elevated height difference offers unblocked lake view and good privacy for various areas. The north and south slopes and valleys in the west of the site are designed with independent suites. The cluster layout not only forms an internal courtyard, but also establishes a diversified pedestrian system. The Nourishing Club is located in the northernmost, and enjoys multi-layer and multi-perspective views.
Buildings in different blocks adopt different methods in the treatment of facade styles. The buildings in the public area and the centralized guest room area have extracted the wooden elements of the "traditional village". The wood in the Jiangnan area is relatively small, and the post and lintel construction or column and tie construction by the splicing of small wood has shaped the basic image of the traditional Jiangnan residence. The small villa’s room are more free and flexible in material practices, which can interpret the wild interest by using a large number of distinctive regional materials and practices such as tile work, stone work, and rammed earth. The application of rural materials is an “expensive” insistence. The manual workload has increased exponentially compared with modern materials. In this long process, the architects have long-term tracking and control of the construction site conditions, so that the hotel is built as an organic mountain community space.
Resort hotel as a place, like a "utopia" outside of "daily life", it will carry idealized images of life. Benefit from the relatively free spatial state of the "village-style" layout, the architects imagined the resort life of the mountain dwelling in this place.
Located on the outskirts of Hangzhou, Xiang Lake is named for the poem " the mountain is beautiful and sparse, the water is clear and deep, and the scenery is better than Xiaoxiang ". Resort hotel is located in a valley in the northwest corner of Xiang Lake, and enjoys a natural tranquility within a short distance of the main lake.
The ultimate goal of designing a hotel is to design a kind of life. In the creation of this hotel, the "village-style" layout strategy is not only to serve the form, but to provide a kind of imagination of living in the mountains accompanied by nature. The public area of the hotel and the centralized guest room area are arranged on the flat ground at different heights, presenting a mountain village composed of many small buildings. The hotel’s courtyard, eaves, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows strengthen the transparency of the space and realize the integration of the external landscape and the indoor space. The landscape is not only visible, but also truly participates in people's various activities. At the same time, the use of a large amount of wood echoes the external landscape, further strengthening the warm and comfortable atmosphere.
The 150-meter-polyline line water platform outside the dining area constitutes an impressive resort scene for mountain dwellings. The tortuous water surface, scattered houses, and the platform base with rich elevations create a moving sequence of spaces. People wander in this sequence and experience a thousand scenes of mountains and lakes. Mountains, water, people, and buildings are combined into a close system, showing an intimate "accompaniment" relationship between human beings and nature.
