Wthn Spa is a 430 sqm beauty salon located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, designed by Sibyl Design Studio and completed in 2020. The core concept behind the project was to reinterpret the spa experience as a modern sanctuary—one rooted in tranquility, self-reflection, and architectural reverence. The inspiration emerged from ecclesiastical spaces, specifically church interiors, where light, height, and materiality contribute to a spiritual sense of calm. This idea translated into the design through the use of vaulted double-height ceilings, giving the central lounge a dramatic yet serene atmosphere, reminiscent of sacred architecture.
A key challenge in the design process was organizing a complex program of services—ranging from hair, nails, and massage to facials—within a narrow and elongated site. This required a careful spatial strategy to separate public from private zones while ensuring seamless circulation. The solution was to distribute the program across two levels: public-facing functions such as the reception, nail care, and lounge were located on the ground floor, while more private or immersive treatments like hair services and staff areas were placed on the mezzanine. This zoning strategy not only optimizes customer flow but also enhances the feeling of discretion and retreat within the space.
Material selection played a significant role in establishing the project’s sensory identity. A neutral, earthy palette anchors the space, with the luxurious warmth of Travertine stone used consistently throughout to create a timeless base. In contrast, Rosso Alicante marble highlights the reception desk, acting as a focal point and subtly marking the entrance as a ceremonial threshold. The rest of the interior is deliberately subdued in color and texture, emphasizing tactile surfaces and natural finishes to foster an atmosphere of balance and luxury.
Spatially, the plan emphasizes linear flow with programmatic clarity. On the ground floor, the nail area flanks the central lounge—framed symmetrically to draw the eye toward the vaulted ceiling above. Peripheral rooms like the massage room, WC, and storage are placed discreetly along circulation paths. The mezzanine floor—open to below—preserves visual continuity while housing more intimate functions such as the hair area, staff room, and kitchen, arranged to minimize visual disruption. This careful layering of public and private realms ensures that the spatial experience remains calm, intuitive, and luxurious throughout.
