Wood and mountain cabin is small cabin locate in Mae rim district, Chiangmai, Thailand. The cabin consists of small bedroom, living pantry and wooden deck. A simple wooden structure shape hidden in verdant serene site.
Architecture language of the cabin influence from vernacular architecture and was designed separately in 2 parts of construction. First is the order of steel structure that imitate of the wooden house wall system commonly found in northern Thailand that local builder can easy to understand and familiar to build it. Another part is wall cladding panel with sources of used wood from various area in Chiang Mai. We put an emphasis on prolonging the life span of the materials, by sorting and charring pre-existing wooden planks to reuse them is the way to considered to bringing out the specific meaning of materials and processes in this method. In addition, that burning wooden surface method to preserving the wood which is the knowledge from shou-sugi ban of the Japanese traditional techniques, it is also way to a gradiation of old color to bring it blend together. This method is adapted to use characteristics of local Thai wood which is more resistant to weather conditions than wood that must be Specified and imported from abroad.
With the intention of do the expression part of the architecture by ourself. We done all burning process in our workshop. So using wood burning for us is not just about seeking and bringing that kind of aesthetic without context of the material significant but it’s about understanding the material and making it by our self. As we intend to leave the imperfections in each shade of burning wood plank to symbolize this building is the work of architecture by human hands (Human expression).
