As you approach this residence in Napa County, two existing palms create a grand, welcoming entrance. The new cedar fence with galvanized posts is understated with materials that fit into a rural setting. The entry gate opens up to a gravel courtyard edged with low concrete walls and informal plantings.
Surrounded by vineyards, this property was revitalized with a renovated farmhouse and a thoughtfully designed landscape to reflect the new use of the site as a wine country family getaway. The landscape was designed to be modern, with a nod to its agricultural roots, emphasizing environmental sensitivity through permeable surfaces and low water use plants. The materials chosen are simple and timeless.
In a forward-thinking approach, the backyard combines gravel and large bands of poured-in-place concrete in unconventional ways to create multifunctional spaces. In high-traffic areas, the bands are more densely laid out and add a striking pattern.
The sculptural existing pine is the main character of the garden. It stretches out its canopy, providing much-needed shade while framing the views. A swing hangs from the pine for a moment of play or relaxation. The client had considered removing the pine, but was convinced how special it could be as a focal feature of the landscape.
The chosen planting palette is primarily green and blue, with splashes of purple and yellow that complement the expansive sunset views on the property. Grasses and drought-tolerant plants replace traditional lawns with a water-wise design that shimmers in the sun’s golden hour.
To the west, a sleek trellis provides a shaded spot for a dining table to enjoy meals by the vineyards. It has a slim steel frame so as not to detract from the surrounding views. A bocce court and firepit are nearby for entertainment. The rectangular concrete firepit creates a designated gathering point with a cozy enclosure of grasses and perennials. Furniture, pots and accent pieces are primarily black, contrasting with the white house and tying into the dark trim. The surrounding deck was part of the architecture and is constructed from wood to echo the farmhouse aesthetic. Natural concrete bands harmonize with the white exterior and light wood.
The pool area is located along the side of the house with the old garage-turned-pool-house. An informal planted screen lines the pool.
Behind the pool house on the south end of the lot sits the she-shed, custom-built for fabric dyeing. Made of wood and glass, the shed is filled with light, and the wood will gracefully weather to a grey color over time. Nearby are galvanized farm troughs for vegetables and flowers. The north side is marked by meandering concrete bands through plantings and small seating nooks.
This design enhances the property’s natural beauty while also promoting a water-wise landscape that is as inviting as it is functional. Prioritizing water-wise landscaping and using locally sourced materials suited to the rural setting, this design respects the heritage of the farmhouse while introducing a forward-thinking approach to outdoor spaces.
