Westfield Folkhouse, located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, is a Grade II listed Building that has been used as a youth facility for over sixty years. The facility no longer met the requirements of local demand and over the years has fallen into a tired state. The property, dating back to the 1830’s was originally a Georgian House and has seen numerous adaptations/ extensions. No longer being fit for purpose and being in a poor state of repair, a comprehensive and considered design solution was required to give the property a sustainable future and to serve the local youth community.
The project brief was to demolish the extensions erected between 1960 -1980 and provide a new two storey extension with external sport facilities; In addition to the restoration and refurbishment of the existing Grade II House. A strong emphasis was placed on maintaining the original architectural character of the building, whilst making it appropriate for a 21st Century provision. The brief and design evolution were informed and developed through a series of consultations with varied consultants and stakeholders – including workshops, presentations and interviews. Furthermore the local site’s history and heritage greatly influenced the final design proposal for the new centre.
