Watchtower Einderheide Dutch studios NEXT architects and H+N+S Landscape Architects present a bat-friendly wooden lookout in The Netherlands. Rising 26 metres above the forest canopy, the Einderheide Watchtower offers an immersive journey through nature. Its curved silhouette and central spiral staircase transform a simple ascent into an experience of discovery, with cut-outs at varying heights framing unexpected views of the wooded landscape. At the summit of this landmark, visitors encounter panoramic vistas that celebrate the tranquillity and dynamism of the site. Innovation in Form and Construction The towers slender 1:5 ratio and compact 5x5m foundation minimise environmental impact while achieving striking elegance. Prefabricated elements were assembled on-site to overcome restricted access and reduce disturbance to the forest. Laminated Douglas fir columns form the primary structure, chosen for strength and durability, while thermally modified cladding ensures longevity with minimal maintenance. Ecology and Integration Designed as a living habitat, the tower supports six bat species year-round. Roosts at multiple heights mimic tree hollows, while a concrete base conceals a bat cellar for winter hibernation. Rough wooden surfaces provide grip for bats, and integrated cabinets and crevices offer breeding and shelter opportunities. This ecological approach positions the tower as both landmark and conservation tool, reinforcing biodiversity in the Einderheide forest. Wood as Material and Message Wood was selected for its tactile quality, sustainability, and resonance with the surrounding landscape. Its natural texture enhances the visitor experience while creating a hospitable environment for wildlife. The material choice reflects a commitment to circular design and low-carbon construction. Impact Part of the N69 development, the tower acts as a visual beacon and a cultural icon along The Greenest Road of Brabant. It connects infrastructure, ecology, and human experience, demonstrating how architecture can harmonise innovation with nature.
