The existing “Werkstatt am Bahnhof” for people with psychological impairment had been situated in a former discounter and did not suit the minimum Standards in terms of structure and spacial allocation. Furthermore the number of assisted workers increased so new room for them and the neccesity for technical facilities had to planned.
The new building had to be built on the same plot with ist proximity to the towncentre of Altötting and the station. Because of the long and narrow footprint of the plot the two storey building spans paralel to the connction road.
Due to the clear and linear building struture in combination with a soothing, minimalistic material palette and intuitive circulation area the caretakership and therapy offers is supported by the buildings architecture.
Attached to the two storey high exposed, precast concrete structure is a one storey high annex cladded in wood to form a smooth transition to the compartmentalized neighbouring development. The interior follows a linear Division in three zones: The lounge and recreational zone is situated right after the entrance with a connection to the canopied terrace and the herb garden in the west. The eastern adjacted main buidling houses the Working and production rooms. The one storey high annex is used for the sanitary and functional rooms.
The workspaces on the ground floor have large ceiling high glazings to the south which enables bypassers to participate in the work done there. To shelter these areas against sunlight a canopy spans above the openings which also generates a social meeting place for the employees.
The central warehouse and truck loading zone is situated At the end of the building in the east.
