The vocational school in Mühldorf am Inn, Bavaria had to create additional spaces for the agricultural machinery mechanics and the mechatronic technicians for utility vehicles and motor vehicles. Because of the lack of space in the existing building a new one was the only option. The only option on the school property for the placement of the structure was a very complicated formed plot with a split level besides a main connection road. In addition to that situation the new spaces for the learning workshops needed the possibility to pass through them from north to south with heavy machinery like combine harvester, trucks and tractors.
The new structure reacts to the hexagonal structure of the existing courtyard and the existing building. It is attached to the existing school, follows the streetline which forms a polygonal structure.
The facade is cladded with handcrafted standing seam aluminium sheets in black to show the artisanal education of the school to the bypassing people. The openings in the facade are bordered with black frames to structurize and soothe it and the emphasize the entrances.
The materials used inside are reduced to light grey exposed concrete, light grey floorings and white ceilings to emphasize the exciting visual relationships created because of the polygonal structure and the different levels. To create a contrast to the desaturated surfaces doors, built in furniture as well as all areas which are directly attached to the existing building are made with an bright orange finish. The staircase of the classroom wing and the alcoves to the classrooms were also cladded orange to give them an additional importance.
The contrast between the dark exterior and light interior enables bypassers to participate in the school life.
