Today the population of Norway is approximately 5 million. The Norwegian government estimate that the population of our cities will see a substantial increase in the forthcoming years.
To successfully handle this expected growth, it is important to develop new areas within the city centre of Bergen. OBOS, the largest cooperative building association in the Nordic region, has years of experience in developing good urban residential areas. This is what started the manifesto “10 på 10”, a manifesto with the ambition to build 10 000 new flats in Bergen city centre within the next 10 years. This manifesto also sparked the initiative to start “Vision Dokken”.
The creators behind “Vision Dokken”, Asplan Viak and MAD arkitekter, identified the industrial docklands in Bergen “Dokken”, as an area with the potential of housing over 3500 new dwellings. In the present day “Dokken” holds cargo boats and cruise ships. The Bergen docklands measures 249 acres, which opens up the possibility for a sustainable development consisting of residential areas, business areas and recreational areas, with excellent transport links. With a potential to accommodate 3500 dwellings and 8000 workplaces, «Dokken» in Bergen could be the largest urban development project in Norway after the Bjørvika development in Oslo.
This scheme provides an opportunity for the city to expand all the way down to its coast line, regenerating large areas suited for urban city life. A new walkway system will connect “Dokken” to the existing city centre. In addition, a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge, stretching across the fjord, connect the two sides of the “Puddefjord”, which will enhance the urban quality in the area.
“Vision Dokken” is an opportunity for the city of Bergen to house its present and future citizens in a prosperous new development within the confines of the city centre.
