Within the moments
of light and shadow, this project seeks to amplify spatial ambiguities between
interior and exterior spaces and between earth and sky while offering rich and
multi-layered spaces for the contemporary disciplines of urban art, poetry,
music, theatre and song. This proposal offers the notion of a tectonic quilt
where art, events, and places are re-visioned and re-stitched as they are woven
into the architecture.
In 2000, we began working with our client to help
develop the program. Although the actual site location has remained constant
since its inception, other factors have shifted. In 2002, other developers
whose interest lay in the housing component lost their appetite for the risks
in the endeavor. Finally, in 2003/4, the existing church structure proved to be
prohibitively costly to adaptively re-use leading to its departure from the
scope.
Final
Program Parameters (2004-present):
47,000 square feet of a new building to
house visual arts studios, galleries, performance space, administrative spaces,
retail functions, and dance studios. Using masonry block to amplify connection
to the earth and translucent/transparent skins to reach to the sky, we
celebrate the body of the building by allowing it to perform as a backdrop to
the range of activities and events within and outside of its boundaries.
