The existing building is registered as a cultural monument, the appearance of which must be preserved in its entirety. It is very small in size, so we had to carefully add new living areas.
The existing house is being reconstructed, the outside walls, the facade and windows are preserved to look as the original. Along the south and east façades, a new extension is added. This way we increased the volume living space within the building plot. It is designed on three floors (basement, ground floor and first floor) with a flat green roof. The façade of the new extension is mostly in glass – anonymous enough to expose the existing buidling’s importance. The reconstruction of the existing building and the new extension together represent one residential unit.
Connections between the spaces within the existing building and the spaces of the new extension are designed at the ground floor level where the main living areas are located. In the basement there are technical and entertainment areas. The upper floor has a more intimate feel with individual sleeping areas.
The main objective was to create an extension that would be designed not to devalue the elements under the cultural protection of the existing building. Thus, the dominance of the existing suburban house will be even further emphasized. The exterior of the extension will be modern and slick and will not stand out from its built environment and devalue the quality historic features of the existing villa.
The proportions and design of the existing facility are preserved and the dimensions of the extention do not outweigh the existing volume.
Around the property a park is located that contains trees that are also listed under the cultural heritage protection. The park is almost entirely preserved and the position of these trees define the fluid shape of the new extension.
