Named in honor of Al Palmer, a retired brigadier general with the U.S. Air Force, the Visitor Center at Veterans Memorial Park is a necessary service and support structure for park management, expressed as a gateway/interpretive center for park visitors. The resulting design creates a formal sense of arrival for the new and expansive Veterans Memorial Park. By optimizing the individual needs of City, Park Board, and Veterans groups, this small structure welcomes visitors, honors service members, supports park operations (with equipment storage and restrooms), recognizes sustaining contributors with a donor wall, and provides an interactive educational kiosk that connects visitors with the unique service stories of local veterans.
The project poetically fuses a locally sourced, minimalist material palette with military values. Concrete slabs standing at the "position of attention" represent the strong, dignified, and silent posture of the military. Greeted with a saluting wood gesture extending overhead, visitors and those who have served, are welcomed with a sense of pride. The building is arranged on an 8’-0” grid as a way of organizing the floor plan and exterior facades. The commitment of the design to the grid is representative of order and discipline as two core values of the military.
