Venice House is a residence for a couple and their dog in Venice Beach adjacent to the original network of canals. As an extension and modification project, the body of the prior 1940’s bungalow establishes a set of control points for the new project. At the apex of the original pitched roof, the center point of a sculptural clerestory volume constructed of twisting squares brings light into the center of the new kitchen and living spaces. Thought of as a reductive sculptural mass, corners over and under stairs are clipped to compress and accentuate these spaces. These modified corners in turn are coded with a wood lining on the interior. Delicate and soft California light enters into the corners of space and spills into adjacent rooms.
