Baumschlager Eberle Architects win competition for an "Urban Village"
LIVING IN A COMPREHENSIVE SENSE
The eponymous Swiss cooperative is planning "Urban Villages". What sounds like a contradiction nevertheless has consequence. The combination of urban density and village coexistence is the basis for comprehensive sustainability that takes into account not only the technical but also the socio-cultural aspects. This package of ideas suits the attitude of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten. Specifically, in the "Urban Village" in Gümligen (Switzerland), special emphasis was placed on generous communal spaces, open spaces and the accompanying infrastructure.
High compactness is a matter of course here (9,195 m² GFA), and a razor-sharp fit of the building in relation to the site is a must. The hybrid construction method consistently implements the special quality of the materials. Concrete brings load-bearing capacity, wood the resource-saving and the feel-good atmosphere. Soon, an "Urban Village" will emerge according to the plans of our Zurich office, combining logic with complexity and the beauty of the authentic.
