The clients have raised their family in this home for nearly 30 years. Now that their third child is only part-time at home, they felt it was time to make some changes. They opted to work with their own place rather than sell and move away, convert their own home into an oasis rather than purchase a vacation property. This project embodies their personal dreams for an active urban retirement in the place that holds family memories.
The entire house was rethought, except the wood panelling in the study was restored and the main shell of the house was maintained with new modern details. The rear addition is a one and half storey, allowing for a large high ceiling great room/kitchen while maintaining a complimentary transitional style to the original 1920's house. She runs a catering business and loves to cook and entertain. The main kitchen is for family parties and entertaining while a 'working' kitchen was designed on the lower level. Both embody the pure fresh ideals, with touches of 'old-world', that she brings to her cooking.
The exterior design, in collaboration with Mark Hartley Landscape Architect, provides an outdoor oasis in which to swim, cook, eat and relax.
The new 'garage' becomes the 3 season cottage complete with fireplace, supplemental heat for cold days, automatic rolling screens on two sides and a powder room.
The asymmetric family room millwork and rough-hewn woodwork of the exterior make for complimentary but unique focal points for both the indoor and the outdoor rooms. The main stair was redesigned and relocated from the center hall to a designated stair hall open from basement to third floor with a side entrance and coat closet at one landing.
The master suite was redesigned, increased modestly in size to make a serene and comfortable bedroom with custom walnut closets and a modern classic ensuite. The Sunroom and ipe deck over the new addition make for a perfect breakfast or night cap space.
