ABA’s renovation and expansion of the University of Pennsylvania Music Building consolidates dispersed academic resources, provides new common spaces for faculty and students, and revitalizes a prominent 19th-century landmark. A model for compatibility of historic and contemporary design expression, it is first building project on campus to receive LEED Gold certification. The 25,000-square-foot Music Building exceeds energy standards through energy-efficient building systems and controls, daylighting, and the purchase of renewable energy.
Equal in size to the original structure, the addition extends the existing building’s massing, materiality, rhythms, and proportions. Acoustically critical programs are housed in the addition, including classrooms, recital and practice rooms, recording studios, and faculty studios. Small and large landscaped spaces create new outdoor gathering areas and large windows open Music Department activities to pedestrians and enthusiasts.
The University of Pennsylvania Music Building project received awards from the Society for College and University Planning, the Boston Society of Architects, the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, and Preservation Pennsylvania.
