On the limestone crest of Uluwatu — the highest point of the site, commanding a panoramic view across the ocean and the sunset horizon — the terrain already performs as a landscape artifact. A carved terrace opens directly toward this vast axis. The project begins with the recognition that this horizon line, rather than the footprint, constitutes the primary value of the land. The ridge reads as a pre-existing monolith, a twenty-year-old geological sculpture shaped by extraction and exposure.
The hotel is conceived as a precise tectonic insertion within this formation. A square limestone plate settles into the existing cut of the cliff, its monolithic presence articulated through a disciplined structural frame. Horizontal slabs follow the contour lines of the terrain, establishing stratification and sectional depth. Along the perimeter, panoramic rooms are organized within this layered mass, their rhythm legible within the overall grid. A transversal volume extends along the sunset line, transforming its roof into a water deck — a calibrated platform where architecture gradually thins toward the horizon. The silhouette expresses a brutal eco-modernism, a mineral geometry at once archaic and exacting.
Public functions are structured around a vertical core that connects restaurants, spa, terraces, and pools across the terrain. The sequence unfolds through layered slabs and sectional shifts, reinforcing the building’s monolithic yet internally differentiated character. Three private villas are positioned behind the main volume, maintaining spatial hierarchy without competing with the cliff edge. Operational infrastructure is embedded at the lower level, preserving the upper plateau as a pedestrian and contemplative environment.
At roof level, horizontal timber slats form a secondary layer — a porous crown that tempers the limestone’s gravity and adds a tactile dimension to the otherwise monolithic reading. Terraces and pools are carved into the section, reinforcing the depth and creating moments where architecture dissolves into the horizon. Water extends toward the ocean in a calibrated infinity, amplifying the site’s natural drama, especially at sunset.
