This project combined the adaptive reuse of a 1960’s era office building, a 1930’s wood warehouse, a metal warehouse from the 1980’s and a new three-story office building to house U-Ship, an Austin based technology company. Repurposing the older industrial buildings prevented a substantial amount of waste from reaching the landfill.
The challenge was to integrate these disparate buildings into a cohesive office environment. The new building acts as a hub, connecting the other existing buildings with an atrium space that included three stacking conference rooms. This allowed for a visual connection from one level to another so that different departments did not feel isolated. The atrium provides a lightwell that brings in natural light through several skylights.
Situated along the banks of Bouldin Creek, an outdoor patio area serves as a casual setting for informal meetings, dining breaks, and a dog park. Amenities like a fully functioning commercial kitchen, led by an executive chef, lure the best and brightest employees to an ever-growing tech community.
