Modern Alpine refuge: functional and minimalist renovation in Valtournenche in the Matterhorn Valley, a stone's throw from the ski slopes.
The primary architectural challenge was to transform a traditional, cramped interior into a high-performance family retreat and rental investment, maximizing every inch of the limited footprint through meticulous spatial planning.
The design concept moves beyond the cliché of the "all-wood" cabin, instead embracing a balanced palette of cream tones, soft fabrics, and textured wood to create a warm, contemporary atmosphere. A key strategic move involved reconfiguring the ground floor: the kitchen was relocated to improve natural light and flow, while a new window was opened to connect the living area directly to the outdoors—a specific request from the clients to enhance the sense of space.
Functional efficiency is further achieved through the redesign of fixed furniture. The original, bulky wooden staircase and fireplace were replaced with minimalist metal structures and technological inserts, freeing up usable floor area and integrating custom storage solutions like plasterboard bookcases. On the upper level, the layout was optimized to include a second bathroom, prioritizing practicality for a family with children without sacrificing the home’s clean, rational aesthetic.
By replacing traditional moldings and heavy finishes with streamlined, modern lines, the renovation successfully demonstrates how a small-scale mountain dwelling can be both a cozy sanctuary and a highly functional, multi-purpose asset.
