Industrial Soul, Contemporary Living: The Residential Conversion of a Former Workshop in Milan
An ex former body shop and photoengraving laboratory was radically transformated into a vibrant, high-personality private residence. Located in Milan and completed between 2020 and 2022, the renovation covers 200 square meters.
The architectural concept centers on a "structural and aesthetic reconversion" that preserves the original volumes while completely redefining the relationship with light and space and giving a contemporary domestic comfort. Externally, the building features a custom-made, handcrafted 3D stringcourse that adds dynamism to the facade, bridging the gap between classical decoration and modern minimalism.
The heart of the home is a 100-square-meter open-space living area, where the original industrial beams —recovered during demolition—serve as the primary design element. Painted in a bold, warm orange, they dialogue with the Siena marble of the kitchen island.
The interior design plays with heights and "see-through" materials, such as micro-perforated metal sheets, to define functional zones without the use of walls. A key example is the integrated mezzanine studio, which optimizes vertical space while maintaining visual continuity.
The transition from public to private areas is managed through fluid, chromatic "filter" zones. Each space, from the light-filled bathrooms featuring Green Forest Marble to the custom-tailored bedrooms, reflects a meticulous attention to bespoke craftsmanship and material selection. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how a dismissed industrial asset can be reclaimed through energy-efficient upgrades and creative design, evolving into a sophisticated "living organism" that honors its past while embracing a bold, new identity.
