The project is a public graduate educational institution jointly established by Tsinghua University and Shenzhen Government, with a land area of 23054.5㎡ and a total construction area of 160794.15㎡. It mainly consists of three enclosed blocks, including national key laboratory platform, micro-nano laboratory, data center, lecture hall, air library, dormitory and supporting living facilities etc.
Due to the limited land area, courtyard layout of traditional campus cannot be adopted, so architects focus on the concept of ‘a borderless three-dimensional campus’. The functional volumes are interlaced and overlapping according to the environmental impact, which echos to the mountain and creates multi-level green communication platforms through a "building block" approach. Considering landscape, daylighting, traffic, greening and other elements, the open design method enlarges the campus boundary to the urban level.
Tsinghua University Shenzhen International Graduate School not only emphasizes teaching and research, but also involves a particularly wide range of academic exchanges between institutions and even international exchanges. The scheme sets up a variety of communication, leisure, dining and greening spaces connected by horizontal bridges, corridors and steps in the building podium, so that different space boxes can "gather" and "pile up" to form new settlement with rich changes.
The red brick element is regarded as an important symbol of the cultural inheritance of Tsinghua University. The podium, corridor, roof, ground paving and air courtyard are all built with red bricks, of which the elements grow organically from the ground up, showing the memory of history and culture, expressing the vision of inheritance and development, and forming a landmark architectural feature of the campus.
This design practise obtains the two-star standard of China Green Construction Environmental Assessment. The characteristic green building design involves, roof greening, vertical greening, rainwater collection and treatment system, solar centralized hot water system etc.
