Hoofddorp, we took up the challenge and we designed a groundbreaking and innovative office for TNT. Today, the energy-neutral TNT Centre is still the most sustainable office in the Netherlands and ranks among the top five in Europe. we wanted mainly connect people with ambitious design. That has resulted in an open and transparent building, consisting of a U-shaped main volume of six floors around a light and open atrium.
In the atrium are employees and visitors together. From noon lunch is here and can be gathered there. The central wooden staircase is an eye catcher in the central meeting and connects the ground floor with terraces on the upper floors. We hid the elevators and the stairs were centered in the space through which movement is encouraged.
We based the design on climate principles such as sunlight, heat, wind and water, the use of recyclable materials and the reduction of fossil fuels. The building captures maximum sunlight through the ideal north-south positioning is daylight throughout the building inside, thanks to innovative shading and we designed acoustic wall panels made of recycled felt.
On the six office floors surrounding the atrium is space for 600 workstations. The flexible work concept allows growth and shrinkage of departments without having to be rebuilt. On each floor are all chosen colors and materials in the interior completely aligned. The open work spaces are combined with comfortable concentration workplaces, which also serve as a space for short consultations. Among these closed consultation room is a meeting area for open and informal consultations.
The Green Machine, a bio cogeneration, is working on using organic waste. Excess energy goes into the grid and a shortage is removed again from here. The heat released in this process we put heating in buildings in the immediate vicinity.
