The benefits of successfully integrating different uses within developments and across neighbourhoods can be huge, both economically and socially. At Tiger Way, we’ve collocated Nightingale Primary School alongside 89 apartments for the developer, Londonewcastle. The school has been financed by the sale of the apartments and it’s this innovative funding method that’s given us the opportunity to create a high-quality school at the heart of its community.
The two-storey building replaces an old school on the edge of Hackney Downs park, accommodating more children and ensuring access to better education for everyone. We worked closely with the Local Education Partnership and Nightingale Primary School to design safe, playful and inspiring spaces full of light with wide corridors and plenty of access to the outside.
Classrooms wrap around expansive outdoor play and teaching areas at both ground floor and at roof level, and we even managed to exceed baseline briefing areas, providing specialist spaces that promote wellbeing including a flexible ‘Park Room’ that looks out across Hackney Downs.
Key to the scheme was ensuring both the school and residential uses had an individual identity while creating a sense of unity. This was achieved through the continuity of material and architectural language. We used three subtle shades of cream terracotta cladding across Tiger Way, a material choice that responds to the surrounding context. The school, facing its community, pops with colour from the play areas and its vibrant green window frames while the residential blocks, with views over the park, feature sophisticated bronze elements.
