Within the Tianjin Cultural Center park designed by SWA Group, Ojanen Chiou Architects designed a series of architectural pavilions that serve as focal points within the larger landscape: an amphitheater, visitor center/café, and observation tower. Though modest in scale relative to the surrounding Cultural Center, the structures are conceived as sculptural interventions that respond to the park’s sinuous landscape while drawing inspiration from the site’s history as a center of industrial research and manufacturing.
Each pavilion creates a distinct spatial experience and a different way of engaging with the park. The amphitheater provides a setting for performances and communal gatherings, while the visitor center and café create a welcoming destination for information, rest, and refreshment. The observation tower, which was designed but not constructed, was conceived as a vertical landmark offering panoramic views across the park and surrounding Cultural Center.
Together, the pavilions establish a series of architectural moments within the larger landscape, connecting contemporary public uses with the site’s industrial history and providing visitors with changing perspectives on the park, the Cultural Center, and the surrounding city.
