Concept
In a world shaped by rapid urbanization, human connection to nature has slowly diminished. Three-Fold Hermitage was designed as a gentle refuge where architecture withdraws from the noise of cities and returns to silence, simplicity, and self-reflection. Suspended among trees, it offers a place for individuals to reconnect with their inner selves and the living environment around them. Inspired by John Cottingham’s philosophy of Trialism, the project embodies the harmony between the Physical (Body), Metaphysical (Mind), and Non-physical (Spirit) — forming a spatial and spiritual triad.
Design Approach
The design takes form as a series of pyramids — a timeless geometry known for balance and clarity. Each group of three to five pyramids is connected by suspended wooden bridges that encircle a central tree, accessed through a spiral staircase. The structure floats lightly among the branches, secured by six steel cables to the surrounding trees. This sense of levitation creates a meditative experience, where one feels suspended between earth and sky — between thought and stillness.
Structure and Materials
The construction combines strength and delicacy. A steel frame ensures stability, while oak wood adds warmth, durability, and resistance to decay. Aluminum frames provide precision and lightness, and special fixation pads allow the structure to attach securely to trees without leaving scars on the landscape.
Sustainability
The hermitage is designed as a fully self-sustaining unit. Solar panels and a vertical-axis wind turbine generate renewable energy. Heating pipes warm the floor and corners, while natural ventilation and daylight reduce the need for mechanical systems. A water tank and compost system complete the cycle, allowing the unit to live independently in harmony with nature.
Philosophy
Three-Fold Hermitage is more than a shelter — it is an experience of coexistence. It floats lightly, breathes with its environment, and listens to the forest. It reminds us that architecture can be humble yet profound — a space where resilience meets stillness, and silence becomes a form of healing.
