Concept
What Every Child Needs
Our proposal aims to answer a simple yet essential question: What does every child truly need?
Education, safety, spaces for gathering, sport, and joy—all within an atmosphere of love.
“A Heart” is designed around a heart-shaped courtyard, creating a nurturing environment where all of a child’s needs can be met. This project is more than a school; it is a home that embraces cultures and traditions. A space filled with warmth and care.
The circular design addresses one of the main challenges of this competition: adaptability. The proposed model can be integrated into various locations, beginning with two sites in Dillu and Hiddi, while remaining flexible enough to suit any land conditions. Our primary goal is flexibility: spaces that can evolve and expand as needs grow.
The design unfolds in two wings, separated by main and secondary entrances:
• Phase I includes four classrooms, a covered courtyard, and latrines.
• Phase II allows for future expansion, adding multifunctional spaces, a kitchen, dining area, and a corral with orchard.
This phased approach ensures that the school can grow organically, accommodating additional programs and activities over time.
Sustainability
ABAY seeks a self-sustaining model for its schools, and this proposal integrates passive design strategies to optimize resources:
• Water management: All run-off water is collected in tanks for later use.
• Natural ventilation: Fresh air circulates through classrooms and interior spaces, reducing reliance on mechanical systems.
• Energy efficiency: Straw sheets on classroom roofs provide natural insulation, while light wood slats allow sunlight to permeate indoor spaces, reducing the need for artificial lighting since electricity is not supplied in the town.
Materials and Construction
The heart-shaped courtyard is framed by doors and windows crafted from local wood. Traditional heavy timber methods form the structural system, supporting a roof of metal sheets. External walls are built with a clay-mud hybrid, blending durability with local construction techniques.
Joyful Spaces
Every corner of “A Heart” is designed to inspire joy. A carefully orchestrated sequence of playful elements, vibrant icons, and interactive spaces ensures a continuous state of excitement, wonder, and love for every child who steps inside.
