Initially the City of Toronto and Toronto Public Library selected our team to add to the existing Community Centre spaces and expand the existing library. Upon early analysis we suggested changes to the city's proposed layout that rationalized the two programs on their own floors. This solution represents a significant capital and operational savings for the city.
When plans to re-locate the existing childcare off-site were unsuccessful we were able to create an expanded layout, on the extremely tight site, for a new childcare wing. Working with the three public user groups, the local councillor and the community advisory board we have successfully guided the extremely dynamic design process, consistently finding opportunity within the challenges faced. The final design not only includes phasing of construction to accommodate the group's operational schedules but also represents a solution that balances concerns such as preservation of parkland, sustainability and budget.
