As part of The Roasterie’s branding initiative, the Kansas City-based coffee company sought to open a new café within its existing manufacturing plant. Here, guests would be allowed an intimate view of the process and more through guided tours, tastings and other interactive programming. However, the five existing industrial buildings were disjointed and aesthetically off-base, requiring significant modifications.
To begin, IAA carefully re-purposed and joined each of the separate buildings by moving the central loading docks to the perimeter allowing for an addition and other unifying elements. Furthering the design challenge - and effect - the project owner purchased an actual DC-3 aircraft to be used “somewhere on the property.” The iconic attraction were reinforce the brand concept: premium air-roasted coffee produced from the best beans available from around the world, flown in small batches to the heartland. This bold idea was fully embraced, and the plane is perched directly atop the building in such a way that it feels as if it’s taking flight. The runway structure supporting it, leans forward in a gesture of setting the plane free. The dramatic scene unifies the previously disjointed complex into one cohesive building.
Inside, the café barista bar is the central focus. Its organic shape and striking green hue resemble a fresh coffee bean and sprout. The surrounding seating areas, reception desk - crafted from an actual plane engine - merchandise displays, cupping room and production facility, office and event space all work to further reinforce the brand iconography and provide a memorable guest experience.
