For 60 years, Fountain House has been dedicated to the recovery of individuals with mental illness, providing opportunities for members to live, work and learn in a community of mutual support.
The life expectancy of people with serious mental illness is on average 25 years less than the general population. The Lewis Wellness Center’s goal is to provide and facilitate health and fitness for the 1300 members of this community and to encourage and teach lifestyle changes that help counteract the side effects associated with psychotropic medications used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or depression.
A multipurpose court with a large open area providing collective space for daily meetings and larger gatherings is the heart of the project. Adjacent, a commercial kitchen is used for teaching healthful cooking and to offer light meals for the community of members.
The upper floor supports a complete fitness program with a variety of supervised workshops in integrative health. A loft with gym equipment offers an inspiring view to the city skyline. A small studio overlooking the court below, sheathed in frosted glass, houses yoga and dance classes. Specialized furniture offers flexible work areas for members and staff. New changing rooms and shower facilities complete the program.
Light, air and proximity to nature inform the design. Eastern and southern exposures allow ample natural light. High-efficiency co-generation and LED lighting systems support the sustainable program. A band of operable windows lets in fresh air, while overlooking a green roof that provides relief from the compressed city environment beyond.
A decorative plaster wall anchors the space while sheltering the fitness loft from the double height court. An elegantly curved acoustical ceiling floats over and connects the floors of the Wellness center.
