The Nostalgia Hall: A Rustic Blend of Heritage Puzzle Pieces
The Nostalgia Hall was envisioned as a multifunctional extension on the 4th-floor rooftop of The Vibes Co-space project, occupying a reserved area designated for future expansion during the project's completion in 2021. Benefiting from an interconnected system of open walkways and corridors, it seamlessly connects to the landscaped rooftop garden on the 3rd floor, providing an outdoor space for related activities.
Access to The Nostalgia Hall is facilitated through a network of staircases and corridors, with a supplementary elevator. The lift corridor features a green walkway sheltered by a large canopy rising 5 meters high and extending generously on both sides. This area is lined with dense greenery, benefiting from abundant natural light and ventilation, while serving as a verdant passage that links the hall to outdoor F&B facilities and the 3rd-floor rooftop garden. The design fosters a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the user experience with smooth transitions.
The sense of openness is further emphasized by the entrance corridor leading to the main hall, designed as a refreshing pre-function space. A wide-reaching canopy at a slightly lower height creates a shaded area, ideal for tea breaks, while the corridor itself serves as a wellness zone, offering calming views of the rooftop garden below and glimpses of the Saigon River in the distance.
Rooted in a nostalgic theme, the hall features a striking wall composed of 160-year-old roof tiles preserved from a historic church. This wall, carefully reassembled and established as the hall's interior focal point, infuses the space with a profound sense of heritage and authenticity. The prominence of this feature is enhanced by a seamless skylight above, complemented by spotlights that accentuate its textures and play on shadows with both natural and artificial light.
The feature wall is set 7 meters away from a frameless glass facade, serving as a stage backdrop. To address the hall’s acoustic needs, the design involved assembling the tile wall into horizontal, louver-like layers with 100mm gaps, each louver angled at 45 degrees. Positioned 150mm offset from a vertically corrugated backing wall made of composite bitumen and synthetic fibers (Onduline), this perpendicular baffle system effectively diffuses sound throughout the hall. While the tile wall absorbs mid-to-low frequencies, the perforated origami-style ceiling enhances the absorption of mid-to-high frequencies. Together, these components create an affordable yet efficient acoustic environment, minimizing reverberation and controlling sound reflections for optimal clarity.
The Nostalgia Hall is a highly adaptable venue, designed to host a wide range of events, from talk shows and mini concerts to recitals, workshops, and other functions. With a capacity to host between 80 and 120 guests, the acoustically controlled environment guarantees both comfort and sound clarity, ensuring the hall’s versatility across various event formats.
The architectural form is defined by its simple and clean massing, with roof proportions and an entrance porch height inspired by traditional aesthetics. The rustic tones of the eco-friendly cladding materials, combined with the evocative use of corten steel, create a retro-inspired visual narrative that feels both timeless and contextually relevant. The wooden bench seating along the entrance corridor is inspired by the bold wooden thresholds commonly found in traditional Vietnamese doorways.
Ultimately, The Nostalgia Hall is a celebration of continuity and history, preserving a fragment of Saigon's oldest standing church within a contemporary architectural framework. Far more than just a multifunctional venue, it stands as a deliberate synthesis of historical significance and modern design, offering an experience that speaks to both memory and innovation
