One of Chicago’s treasured landmarks, the Newberry Library is a world-renowned independent research library, offering an extensive collection of rare books, maps, art, manuscripts, and other printed material spanning six centuries. Designed by notable Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb in the Romanesque Revival style, the library was completed in 1893. Through renovation of the historic entrance level, the Newberry and ABA sought to make the impressive building more accessible and inviting to visitors.
ABA’s renovation transforms 25,000 square feet of space, creating an engaging and accessible arrival experience and showcasing the library’s collections through its new exhibition galleries. The first floor’s historic spaces have been restored, their rich character enhanced with new lighting and acoustical improvements. New rooms welcome and orient visitors, with amenities including an expanded bookstore, seminar rooms, program spaces, and a lounge. New galleries display thematic exhibitions, with a unique built-in display case highlighting treasures from the Newberry’s collection.
