Perkins Eastman was commissioned to design a dynamic new mixed-use destination district featuring the New York Wheel—the world’s tallest observation wheel in design—adjacent to Staten Island’s ferry terminal. A combination of engineering and nature, this new landmark and its surrounding program and landscape will attract visitors and residents alike, providing a universally accessible, high-quality public space that will transform the currently underused waterfront.
As an important new component of the extended city skyline, the 630-foot-tall Wheel will offer visitors stunning views of Lower Manhattan, the outer boroughs, and the connecting waterways. The surrounding site; including a 100,000 sf terminal building, 950-car parking garage, bus storage facility, roof and grade landscape, and an extensive sustainability program, involving wind turbines, solar panels, use of locally sourced materials, limiting light pollution, and naturalized landscapes; was designed to complement the Wheel, while reinforcing its role as the marquee of the Staten Island waterfront.
