The new Native Child and Family Life Centre in Scarborough, Ontario is an Aboriginal-focused childcare and multi-purpose community hub. Its bold form is a visible statement about self-determination and native presence in a diverse city. A curvilinear Corten addition with an exposed wooden underside houses four dedicated childcare rooms, a shared youth and adult classroom, and two multi-purpose rooms. The programmatic needs are enhanced by an educational garden and playground. Sustainable design strategies were integral to the project, reflecting Aboriginal philosophies about environmental stewardship. The centre has become a lively node for community ceremonies and celebrations.
