The original Outdoor Pool Facility, at The Hurlingham Club in London, recognised world-wide as one of Britain’s greatest private members’ clubs, were dilapidated and unsuited to modification.
The swimming pools were cracked and in a deteriorating condition and the water treatment plant was significantly out of date and inefficient. There were also a fundamental lack of facilities for people with impaired mobility.
The resulting scheme comprised a 30m (or 100ft) pool, a 12m children's pool, a changing room building and a cafe, integrated sensitively into the picturesque 42 acres landscaped grounds of the Club.
The new design meets with current and emerging standards for accessibility, design, operation, maintenance and hygiene. The pools and buildings are sustainable in terms of construction materials and processes, making use of up-to-date technology and have been designed for long term future use.
The need to provide new facilities also presented a prime opportunity to improve on the original compound layout, achieving more efficient use of the limited space available and providing a high quality swimming pool environment which could re-engage with its sensitive landscape setting.
The new buildings retain the charm of the original traditional lido style buildings while providing high quality, modern, accessible changing facilities with an efficient layout, maximising the incorporation of natural day-light.
“David Morley Architects perfectly understood the sensitivity of the pool area to Club members and the setting within a Conservation Area. The new state of the art pool environment draws on the much-loved rhythm, scale and materials of the original lido style buildings, whilst providing modern and accessible facilities for members to enjoy.” Stephen Powell, Estates Executive,The Hurlingham Club.
