Thames Baths Community Interest Company (CIC) is a social enterprise founded by Studio Octopi for re-introducing swimming in the River Thames. The proposals re-establish an intimate and playful link between Londoners and this historic lifeblood of the city.
The proposals are focused on the central London stretch of the river but could occur anywhere along the River Thames. Imagine swimming in a floating lido, surrounded by reeds that frame tantalising views of the city around you.
The project has been covered extensively in the global press. It featured in a major exhibition on urban swimming in 2014 (London) and 2016 (Barcelona)and in 2015 Chris Romer-Lee (co-founder of Studio Octopi & Thames Baths) was invited to do a TEDx talk.
In 2015 the project featured on crowdfunding site Kickstarter and raised £142,000 in 30 days. The campaign formed 1200+ Founding Members who now form the core to the community supporting Thames Baths.
The ideas were launched in 2013 as part of the ‘London As It Could Be Now’ programme, an open call ideas project, developed by Royal Academy of Arts, The Architecture Foundation and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.
