The objective of project B 618 was to grant open spaces that could be used as social areas to inhabitants of apartments in an already existing housing building. Taller Integral was assigned the creation of a project to use the space that at the moment was just a rooftop. The Project met one of the main axis of the office that is the creation of open spaces in our buildings. As opposed to closed spaces, where intimate aspects of life happen, open spaces enable social interaction and allow users to relate with the environment. It is in the open space and through social interaction that citizenship is achieved, and human development objectives are satisfied. However, large metropolitan areas face space scarcity that threatens the protection of open areas and limits the relationship with the environment for its citizens. Therefore, the project posed a unique opportunity for the office to materialize our objectives. The main challenge was to limit the space to create six different terraces without threatening the feeling of wide space and freedom aiming to achieve. The solution proposed by the office was to use plant boxes instead of rigid limits to the space. Visually, the plant boxes work as green cushions integrated into the environment surrounding the building. As a result, this space fully integrated with the environment became a real alternative for social interaction in an open space within an urban context.
The project was designed in 2018 and built in 2019, before the pandemic outbreak hit the world, but its aims are even more current now when natural ventilation and illumination have become even more desirable features of the space. As an architectural office, the pandemic has only reinforced our commitment to encourage the use and generation of open spaces that, when used, contribute to the protection of human dignity.
