Tender is located in the bank building which was originally built for the Arsenal Bank of Pittsburgh in 1884. The design responds to the restauranteur’s vision for a period concept of an early 1900’s “speakeasy.” In order to create the speakeasy feel, the elaborate bar was designed to be the restaurant’s centerpiece. A long, upholstered banquette, opposite the bar, anchors the room.
The front entrance utilizes the original bank entry vestibule and stair while a new accessible entry was carved out at a newly-created secondary spot. The ground floor was re-opened back to the street to allow the activity of the new restaurant to add to the energy of the street. One of the main challenges in redeveloping the ground floor restaurant was working within the various floor levels. In an effort to maintain the existing historic corner entrance and steps into the main floor level, a new entrance was developed along the side of the building adjacent to the existing upper floor entrance. This new entrance provides handicap access to the restaurant as well as dining access to the sidewalk seating.
