Surplus Space is a non-profit independent art space that has been operating for ten years. It does not cater to mainstream markets but instead focuses on presenting academic exhibitions. The spatial design revolves around the theme of “surplus,” rejecting complex decoration and over-design, and striving to restore the essence of space: the raw, solid texture of exposed concrete columns and beams takes center stage. The high ceiling is retained to avoid a oppressive viewing experience, while the complex pipelines and visual clutter above are streamlined and integrated into a unified system, allowing light and lighting to merge naturally with the concrete beams. Functional elements within the space, such as the reception desk and display areas, are introduced as installations, while also drawing on the traditional Chinese garden technique of “framed view” (jingjing), which cleverly “frames” artworks within the space, achieving a harmony of functionality and poetic conception.
