Adopting the design concept of “Reading Under the Big Trees”, this project systematically creates a green and low-carbon campus in terms of regional climate adaptation, passive spatial creation, photovoltaic power generation and functional intensification.
01 Tree-like Spaces and Under-eave Shading
Following an organic “tree-branching” formal logic, teaching clusters are arranged like tree branches. Elevated ground floors, grey spaces and linear horizontal overhangs create abundant shaded areas under eaves. Drawing on traditional architectural wisdom such as Hainan’s arcade buildings and Li ethnic group’s boat-shaped houses, the design uses a “large-top, small-bottom” configuration. Roof photovoltaics and multi-level platforms form layered open shading spaces, effectively adapting to Haikou’s hot climate and reducing air-conditioning energy consumption.
02 Shared Spine and Functional Intensification
Shared and dynamic facilities including campus activity spaces, library, basketball gymnasium, swimming pool and canteen are concentrated along a central spine, forming a highly inclusive and adaptable vibrant platform. This improves spatial utilization efficiency and avoids resource waste caused by scattered construction.
03 Photovoltaic Power Generation and Zero-carbon Operation
The roof is equipped with 10,700 ㎡ of photovoltaic panels, generating approximately 655 kW·h of electricity per year, which is 129% higher than the building’s own annual energy consumption (655 kW·h), achieving zero carbon emissions during operation. The annual surplus power generation of about 190 MWh can offset 108 tons of carbon emissions from the construction process per year, making it a life-cycle energy-positive building.
04 Ecological Vitality and Fully Open Campus
Through a series of elevated floors and horizontal overhangs, a fluid building cluster of “full openness under one roof” is created. Natural ventilation, daylighting and shading are integrated into one design, forming a model of ecological, vibrant and low-carbon modern campus.
