Located in a peaceful Hutong in the old town of Beijing, No.46 Fangjia is a place that witnessed the historical transformations of the city. Once an arsenal factory during the Sino-Japan war, then a machinery factory after the founding of new China, followed by abandonment until recent years, the compound is now a community for creative industries. In 2009, OPEN completely renovated a single level double-pitch factory warehouse in this compound to house Columbia University GSAPP’s Studio-X Beijing. In the next five years, this warehouse was transformed into a low cost, low maintenance, but highly efficient and adaptive space which multi tasks as educational, conference, exhibition facilities and an event venue. OPEN’s Studio-X renovation was shortlisted for WA Achievement Award of 2014 WA Awards for Chinese Architecture. Then, in May 2015 came the next incarnation of this space. As Studio-X Beijing withdrew its operation in this location, OPEN took over the space, and renovated it again to make it the new OPEN office.
