Shede Cultural Museum, nestled in the East Garden of the Shede Distillery, is surrounded by pristine mountains and river. The design draws on the classical Chinese garden principle of "one pond and three mountains", using water features and island-like volumes to evoke the mythical paradise in ancient Chinese mythology. This idealized vision roots deeply in collective Chinese consciousness and resonates with traditional poetry and spirits culture.
A circular, 90-meter-wide pool integrates seamlessly into the existing garden. The circle, smooth and self-contained, carves out a serene, poetic setting. A translucent corridor encircles the water, connecting three staggered, island-like volumes. The reflections, mist, and bridges create an ever-changing, mysterious atmosphere that invites visitors to explore the profound relationship between Shede spirits, nature, and time.
Each structure embodies part of distillation heritage. The Glass Box, with water flowing on all sides, tells the essential role of water in distillation. The Earth Box uses local yellow earth essential to fermentation, linking traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. The Bronze Box, covered by screens perforated with poetic Morse code, is crafted from the material historically used for liquor vessels and musical instruments, paying homage to the artistry and craftsmanship of spirits-making.
