Maximizing revenues for this 3,000-square-foot venue meant creating a versatile space. Stratus had to accommodate everything from casual post-workout drinks to intimate dinners to large private functions like weddings, sometimes concurrently. The goal: create an ambience that is elegant, yet warm and relaxed, inviting, yet appropriate for its location within the iconic TD Centre in Toronto’s downtown core.
To maximize revenues, we set out to create a series of flexible spaces that could interact as one without interfering with each other. Curving, bottle-lined glass screens, custom pivot doors and bronze screens fitted with mirrors are all artfully placed to separate the various dining spaces. Spaces can be customized to suit a variety of events. For instance, replacing the table in the private dining area with a portable wet bar seamlessly takes the space from intimate dinner to wedding reception.
While each zone delivers its own experience, our attention to materiality and design creates a unifying aesthetic. Our architecture and interior design groups worked as an integrated team to create Stratus’ desired laid-back elegance. Warm finishes, including wood flooring and detailed millwork, cast an inviting tone. A lower ceiling creates a sense of comfort and intimacy.
The client’s vision was fully realized from initial drawings to final delivery; the renovation doubled revenues over a two month period. The response to our work has been so positive that the client has engaged our design team to renovate additional portions of the club.
Stratus is located inside the Toronto Dominion Tower, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. As a nod to the tower’s iconic modernity, the entrance of Stratus is flanked with tall, bronzed mirrors. Emphasizing the importance of connecting the exterior with the interior of the building, the contrasting dark and light mirror panels evoke the office lights which can be seen from street level at night.
