NOMO Studio has revealed their proposal for the revitalisation of the Cathedral Hill in Strängnäs. The chosen strategy integrates the new buildings in the landscape as far as possible in a way that they are almost perceived as invisible. Thus, the cathedral continues to be the main protagonist in its environment with the new elements supporting its role and function, instead of being in relation or contrast with it.
The proposal consists of two new buildings – an entrance building and an administrative building. The entrance building is divided into two volumes that together create a sequence that ends with the main entrance to the church. Both volumes are connected underground and host the reception, a room for visitors, wardrobe and a large multifunctional assembly room that can be divided into smaller units. The administrative building is located in a way that it is partially integrated into the landscape and becomes an extension of the park environment around the church where the public is allowed to access the roof.
The main used material is the corten steel, as it is a durable material that is completely maintenance-free, which aged appearance is not going to change with time and fits well with the existing brick environment.
