Stugan is located in Stadshagen on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. It is a complex project - both programmatically and structurally. Large height differences are met by a carefully designed concrete base that houses - in addition to residential entrances and residential complements - a large grocery store, a preschool, and a two-level garage.
The project is designed with a mix of both large and small apartments – ranging from studios to 6 bedroom apartments. The deep building structures accommodate a number of spacious dual aspect apartments.
The block is built on top of an existing subway station, which has imposed limitations on how loads could be distributed. A subway station is located under one of the structures, which is managed with a bridge-like construction, where loads are distributed on either side of the shaft .
The challenge of placing the building over the subway station has not only been a limitation but also an inspiration. Mosaic with the text “Prince RIP” in one of the entrances, as a reference to the New York subway station, flirts with the building’s location. Artwork by Jan Albert Carlsson.
