The Painterly Approach

Stacking the Deck

San Francisco, CA, United States

STATUS
Built
YEAR
2016
How do you take advantage of a long narrow San Francisco lot perched on the side of a hill? Stack the house and its terraces to celebrate views from every level, and then tumble it down into the long and narrow lot to ground it to place.

The seamless connection to home, sky and land was a collaborative effort in this Leed Platinum Certified urban renovation. Each terrace has a unique view and degree of privacy as it soars or is nestled against an edge. The firepit and spa add a graphic geometry to the elevated views, and provide spaces for relaxation.

Materials continued from the interiors and architecture to the landscape soften the verticality of the building. Wood-faced landscape walls transition the building to a human scale. The shipping container works double duty as architecture and garden, with its green roof.

Edible fruits and vegetables round out this composition of spaces that stack together as one.
